Refrigerator Not Cooling? Common Causes and Quick Checks

Is your fridge not cooling properly or the freezer working but the fridge warm? See the common causes, easy checks at home and when to call for repair.

Overview

A refrigerator that stops cooling can spoil food in a few hours, so it helps to know what to check first. Many causes are simple, but a few need a technician.

Quick checks

  • Check that the temperature knob or display is set correctly, not on the lowest setting.
  • Make sure the door closes fully and the rubber gasket is not torn or dirty.
  • Do not overload the fridge. Air needs space to move between items.
  • Leave a gap of a few inches behind and at the sides so the back can release heat.
  • Make sure the fridge is plugged in and the socket has power.

Common causes

Dirty condenser coil. Dust on the coil makes the fridge work harder and cool less. The coil is at the back or under the fridge in many models.

Worn door gasket. A loose seal lets warm air in, which causes weak cooling and frost.

Faulty fan motor. In frost-free models, a stopped fan can leave the fridge section warm while the freezer stays cold.

Defrost system fault. Heavy frost at the back of a frost-free fridge can point to a faulty defrost heater, sensor or timer.

Thermostat or sensor fault. A wrong reading makes the compressor stop early or never start.

Compressor or relay problem. If the fridge makes clicking sounds but the compressor does not run, the start relay or compressor may be faulty.

Low gas. A leak in the cooling system reduces cooling and needs proper repair, not just refilling.

What to do if food is at risk

Keep the door closed as much as possible, move important food to a cool box with ice, and call for inspection. If you switch the fridge off, wait at least five minutes before switching it on again.
