Geyser Not Heating? Causes, Safety Tips and Service Advice
25 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
Find out why a geyser stops heating water, what safety checks matter and how often to service it, especially where the water is hard.
Overview
A geyser works with electricity and water together, so safety matters as much as repair. If your geyser is not heating, leaking or tripping the switch, switch it off at the main supply and have it checked.
Why a geyser stops heating
Faulty heating element. The element is the part that heats the water. Over time it can burn out or get covered in scale.
Thermostat problem. A faulty thermostat can cut the power too early or not allow heating at all.
Scale build-up. In areas with hard water, scale forms on the element and tank walls. It reduces heating and shortens the life of the geyser.
Wiring or supply issue. Loose connections, a burnt connector or a weak supply can stop heating.
Indicator light fault. Sometimes the geyser heats but the indicator is faulty, or the other way round.
Important safety tips
Make sure the geyser has proper earthing and uses a suitable socket and switch.
Do not use a geyser that is leaking, sparking or giving a shock. Switch it off at the main supply.
Keep the safety or pressure relief valve in working condition.
Switch the geyser off after use instead of leaving it on for long hours.
Service advice
A yearly service is a good habit. It includes checking the element, thermostat, wiring, gasket and safety valve, and removing scale where needed. If the water is hard, check more often.
When to replace instead of repair
A tank that is rusted through or leaking usually needs replacement rather than repair. A technician should explain the fault and the cost before any work starts.
